Alan is a slave merchant based in Vale.
Appearance[]
Alan appears to be an older gentleman with gray hair, a mustache, and a beard, and has sharp eyes that look brown. He wears a fine suit and always dons a sword at his waist, presumedly for self-defense purposes and for when he enters the Labyrinth.
Personality[]
Alan possesses a pleasant personality. He is not rude to customers and treats all of his slaves nicely.
Unlike some Slave Merchants, he respects and treats his slaves and employees well, knowing that he can't sell well if they live in a poor environment and aren't well educated.
Surprised and impressed, Michio mentions that all of Alan's slaves for sale wear nice clothes, get a good education, live in good rooms, eat well, and look healthy and clean. Michio even suspects that they would even stay here if they weren't being sold.
Alan dislikes customers who have a "moral compass", in which they buy female slaves but don't ever sleep with them due to it being "morally wrong". He tells Michio that such people shouldn't be so fussy about their purchases regardless if it's a slave or groceries, and calls them fools who don't understand what they're buying and wasted money for nothing.
He also has a great dislike for bandits and criminals, as he didn't hesitate to mercilessly kill them when they intruded upon his residence and treats them like vermin.
He is very respectful towards Michio and seems to hold him in very high regard as a fellow Adventurer.
Alan is also an opportunistic businessman, taking advantage of Michio's predicament to sell Roxanne to him, knowing that he would likely have the funds to buy her. And he would later get his hands on a rare Wizard slave and was quick to take advantage of it by selling him to the highest bidder.
Background[]
Alan is a Slave Merchant who's based in the town of Vale, and he has connections to the Baradam family. When Roxanne's family couldn't pay their taxes, they sold her to him as a slave. Alan agrees to the purchase of Roxanne on one condition, that Roxanne could not be sold to a fellow Wolfkin, because it was jealousy of Roxanne from a female Wolfkin who caused them to have money problems in the first place.
He also has been a merchant of an untold number of years, having vast wealth of experience and connections at his disposal.
He had been an Adventurer of some standing in the past for a number of years, presumedly since he was around Michio's age, and had a "Most Reliable Party" he had fought alongside with. As he grew older, he eventually retired to become a Merchant, and later a Slave Merchant. Though he still goes into the Labyrinth now and again to level up and sharpen his sword skills.
Chronology[]
Alan met with Michio who was looking for a slave. He patiently explained to Michio all that owning a slave entailed. He then offered Roxanne to Michio, on the condition that the young man could raise up enough funds in a week.
When the deadline came, he met once again with Michio who successfully raised enough funds to buy Roxanne.
When Michio came looking for a master smith slave he wrote a letter of recommendation to the imperial's capital slave merchant.
Alan would show him another Wolfkin female slave he had just acquired, but while pretty, paled compared to Roxanne, and Michio was content at the time with Roxanne and Sherry.
Later in Volume 8, Alan would meet Michio again at the Quratar Slave Auction, wanting to sell his prized Wizard slave that he had recently acquired to the highest bidder.
Abilities[]
As a Slave Merchant, Alan can use his skill to alter people's Intelligence Cards to make others the master of slaves they purchase from him or to change existing contracts or wills.
He is also a merchant who's skilled in negotiation and even maneuvering his customers to his advantage when it suits him. He's also a skilled swordfighter, able to fight monsters and bandits easily despite his old age.
Relationships[]
Allies[]
Michio Kaga[]
Alan had a high opinion of Michio in their first meeting after hearing of how he single-handedly overwhelmed and defeated Hugo's gang. Enough that he had faith that Michio would get the required funds to purchase Roxanne, and had enough respect to suggest her to him, after knowing that the latter was planning on exploring the labyrinths.
While skeptical, he listened to Michio's warning about a bandit spying on his estate, and hired him to help against them. He was later grateful for Michio's assistance and was apologetic after assuming that Michio was affected by an Orb of Self-Destruction activated by the dead bandit.
Later, when Michio was looking for a blacksmith slave, Alan would recommend his associate, the Imperial City Slave Merchant, and would even write a letter of introduction on Michio's behalf.
Alan would eventually sell Sherry to Michio. Later on in the LN series, Alan would offer a slave to him from time to time.
Alan seems to hold Michio in high regard, and even probably sees himself in Michio. Which was probably why he was willing to take the time in giving advice concerning slaves, adventuring, bounty-hunting, etc. Alan seems to be fond of him and might even see him as his own son, to a loose extent.
Roxanne[]
Alan seems to care for Roxanne thanks to his relationship with her uncle. To the point that, after finding out Michio's plans to explore labyrinths, he worked hard to convince (more like pressure / manipulate) Michio to buy Roxanne, and even gave him extra time to gather the necessary funds he lacked.
It's possible that he wanted to sell her to someone he knew would take care of her before any Wolfkin clients (namely Baradum) tried to purchase her.
Sherry[]
Sherry hadn't been in the store for long, and was reluctant to sell her before she was fully educated, but eventually caved to Michio's wishes to buy her.
Enemies[]
Bandits of Vale[]
They tried to buy the slave who stole the Bandit Bandana in order to ask for its whereabouts as well as who was responsible for the deaths of Hugo and the other gang leaders. They also spied on Alan's residence to gauge when the best time would be to break into and take the slave. When they broke in before dawn, however, they were met by Alan and his combat slaves, and, due to the bandits' low levels, were easily defeated by them.
Alan is shown to be very dismissive of bandits and criminals and views them as nothing to worry about due to his own skills and having a bunch of combat slaves at his beck and call.
Trivia[]
- When arranging to sell Roxanne, he agreed to the condition not to sell her to any one of the Wolfkin tribes.
- He seems to be good friends and business associates with Bikka.
- Alan mentions in the LN (VM 2 CH 4) that he has a grown son. It's unknown if he has more children, nor about the status of his wife. After retiring from adventuring, Alan would gift his place in his party to his son. They seem to have a good relationship and he seems to love him dearly. It's likely that the slave company is his legacy or inheritance that he plans on passing over to him in the future.
- It's likely that Alan became a Merchant and later Slave Merchant as part of his retirement plan and inheritance for his son. Another likely reason is because he was growing older and he didn't want to die prematurely and leave his family alone.
- Alan is one of the better Slave Merchants that Michio has known, and is the only one he has a close relationship with and respects.
- Alan's company focuses on producing cheap labor slaves and quality combat slaves. Though there are female slaves for the intent of bedtime activities as well as combat.
- The quality of Alan's services far surpasses the Imperial City Slave Merchant's wide and quantity-driven services. While Alan has a fewer number of slaves at his disposal compared to others, every one of them can speak Brahim, has a good education, and many have vast experience in the Labyrinths. Whereas, the latter is choosy on education, treats his slaves ill, and many of them aren't as quality as Michio finds out (though it may be that all the good slaves had already been bought by other clients who also wanted combat slaves for the Labyrinths, as doing so is popular in the Capital).
- Alan at some point got his hands on a male Wizard slave and was selling him at the Quratar Auction (Volume 8), much to the excitement of the buyers, as Wizard slaves are very rare and difficult to obtain.
- His birthday is on September 24.
- His voice actor is Kenta Miyake.
